Someone said I should not take my 1/2 cup of cooked great northern beans a day if I take psyllium husk..not even 1/2 tsp of psyllium in eight oz of water?

Kamala Answers:

There is no reason why you cannot take both.

You can even take 1 tsp of psyllium in one glass of water, followed by two glasses of water or juice. Don't forget to take eight glasses of water throughout the day.

She or he may be referring to the gas and flatulence that are produced by each one. So they believe there will be a lot of flatulence produced if you were to take both.

Beans are nutritious and an excellent source of protein, complex carbohydrates and minerals, unlike Psyllium husks. They contain cholesterol-lowering high soluble fiber too.

Psyllium Husk may not be nutritious. However they have far more cholesterol-reducing high soluble fiber than any beans at five grams per tablespoon.

Beans: One of the problems created by the consumption of beans, like the Great Northern Beans, that you like to eat, is flatulence and intestinal discomfort. But certain people do not suffer any gas or discomfort.

Flatulence is caused by a compound called oligosaccharides in beans.

Oligosaccharides are made up of a few sugar molecules bonded in a certain way. This type of bonding makes it difficult to digest and absorb them.

They tend to break down later in the colon rather than in the small intestines. So they tend to putrefy and form gas.

Psyllium Husks, can wash away the good bacteria in your colon.

If you take Psyllium, replace the good bacteria you lose, by taking Probiotics, such as Latero Flora. The good bacteria found in Probiotics help digest and remove toxins.

If not you could suffer from gas and flatulence.

You can even take yogurt and kefir, although they do not contain the whole range of beneficial bacteria, as Probiotics.

Beans: To overcome gas production by beans, do one or more of the following:
  • Soak your beans for a long time up to two days. Wash off the frothy water daily and replenish with new water before you cook them.

  • Boil the beans for more than ten minutes before you begin to simmer. Well-cooked beans is easier to digest.

  • Add chopped garlic or chopped ginger to beans when cooking.

  • Add spices such as cumin, turmeric, cilantro or asafetida

  • Take yogurt with your meals.

  • It is said that if you eat beans daily, it is bound to make you immune to gas and discomfort. You have to experiment and see if this is true for you.

You can take both beans and Psyllium, with no problems, if you know what to do to reduce gas and flatulence.

If it is from the point of nutrition, then it is not necessary to take Psyllium.

But if you want a high-fiber source, then you can take both.

If your friend meant the possible formation of gas and flatulence, you can see that it can be prevented.
